What Is a Limo?

A limo (short for “limousine”) is a chauffeur-driven vehicle that has been custom-built or upgraded to offer more space, comfort, and luxury features than a standard car. Most people picture a long, stretched car when they think of a limo, but in reality it’s an umbrella term that covers several body styles: classic stretch sedans, SUV limos, and sprinter-style limo buses. Many of these start as well-known models like the Lincoln Town Car and MKT, Chrysler 300, Cadillac Escalade, Lincoln Navigator, GMC Yukon Denali, or Mercedes-Benz Sprinter. Then, a specialty coachbuilder takes the original vehicle, cuts and lengthens the frame, extends the driveshaft and wiring, and then completely rebuilds the interior with all different kinds of upgraded amenities.

Inside, a limo has many different amenities and features designed for fun/luxury. Instead of front-facing rows, you’ll usually see plush leather seats arranged in a wraparound or “J” shape so everyone can talk and see each other. Interiors often include color-changing LED or fiber-optic lighting, tinted windows for privacy, upgraded sound systems with Bluetooth or AUX inputs, TVs, and a partition (a divider separating your from the driver). Many limos have built-in bar areas with ice chests or coolers, glassware, and bottle holders, plus climate controls and charging ports dedicated to the passenger area. SUV and are on the larger side and often seat roughly 10–20 passengers depending on the build, giving you more headroom and easier walk-in access, while classic stretch sedans typically hold about 6–10 passengers.
