How Much Does a Charter Bus Weigh?

A standard full-size charter bus that seats 50–56 passengers (the typical 45-foot motorcoach you see on the highway) usually weighs around 38,700–45,000 pounds empty, and can weigh up to about 50,000–54,000 pounds with passengers, luggage, and fuel onboard. That "fully loaded" number is what most manufacturers list as the bus's gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR).

Smaller buses weigh more than many expect. Buses that seat around 35–40 passengers typically have GVWRs in the 37,000–42,000 pound range when fully loaded, depending on the chassis and configuration. Minibuses that seat around 15–30 passengers are lighter, with empty weights often in the 7,000–14,000 pound range and GVWRs in the 10,000–19,500 pound range.
