Brevard County is a very important natural habitat for sea turtles, so in 1984 a group of conservation minded citizens started what is known today as the Sea Turtle Preservation Society. Not only does the Society work tirelessly to preserve the life of these historic and resilient creatures, but they work as tirelessly to educate the public on the plight of the sea turtle. During a sea turtle walk, some of this education takes place. The turtles come to the beaches of Florida between the months of June and August to lay their eggs. As you walk the beaches, you will notice areas marked off and designated as sea turtle nests. Some areas even change the way in which their street lamps illuminate to help aid in the nesting process of these incredible specimen.

If you aren’t familiar with the phenomenon, you may be asking yourself, “what is bioluminescence?”. Rest assured, you are not alone! Bioluminescence is a chemical reaction. It occurs within tiny living organisms and manifests itself as light. These tiny organisms, commonly known as plankton, go through a process where they rearrange their molecules. When they do this, they emit a light because of a chemical that is produced called luciferin. While that sounds like a whole lot of science, it is actually more artistic to view.
