The Carter House is another historical landmark that survived the Civil War era. Fountain Branch Carter built the home in 1830, and at one point, there was a cotton gin on the property as well, however it is no longer there. Carter and his family sought refuge from The Battle of Franklin in the homes basement. On the grounds there is also a smokehouse, farm office, and kitchen. The home comes alive as tour guides retell the story and guests can actually see bullet holes that are still in the home from the Civil War and The Battle of Franklin that took place here.
Lotz House Museum
1111 Columbia Avenue, Franklin, TN 37064
At one time, this home was almost turned into a taco shop! Thankfully, a civically minded historian intervened and today, the Lotz House is a museum and gateway to the past for visitors and locals alike. The two-story frame house was built in 1858 and was also one of the homes at the center of The Battle of Franklin. On the morning of November 30, 1864 as Albert Lotz looked out his front window, he saw 20,000 Federal troops marching towards the Harpeth River and Nashville. But because the river was swollen, the troops were unable to pass. Seeing their plight, the Confederate Army attacked, this became known as The Battle of Franklin. The Lotz family fled to their neighbors home, The Carters, and together the families sought asylum in the Carter House basement. When The Battle was over, the Lotz house was left with a missing wall and huge holes in their floors and walls from cannon fire. Sadly, there were over 10,000 soldiers left dead in what has been called one of the bloodies battles of American History. Today, the Lotz House is a museum and guests can tour the home and learn all about the family, The Battle of Franklin, and other facts pertaining to this period of American History.
