Alva Scrub Preserve is one of Lee County’s hidden natural gems. This nearly 1,500-acre preserve features 9 miles of hiking trails that wind through pine flatwoods, marshlands, swamps, and scrubby grasslands. As a visitor, you can choose from three loop trails that range from 1 to 3.5 miles in length. Kayak the Orange River
One of the best ways to experience the natural beauty of Lehigh Acres is to kayak or canoe down the Orange River. This spring-fed tributary flows through the eastern side of Lehigh Acres on its way to Estero Bay. Its shallow, slow-moving waters make it an ideal place for beginner paddlers to explore. You can launch your kayak or canoe from the public boat ramp at the Orange River Park off Gunnery Road. This 77-acre park also offers picnic shelters, playgrounds, and sports fields if you want to make a full day out of your visit. As you paddle downstream, you’ll drift past cypress swamps, marshes, and hardwood hammock forests. Keep your eyes peeled for turtles sunning themselves on logs and wading birds like egrets and herons fishing along the shoreline. If you’re lucky, you may even spot manatees or dolphins in the river’s lower brackish sections near the Gulf of Mexico! Most kayak trips take 2 to 4 hours depending on water levels and how far downstream you venture.
