Alva Scrub Preserve is one of Lee County’s hidden natural gems. This nearly 1,500-acre preserve features 9 miles of hiking trails that wind through pine flatwoods, marshlands, swamps, and scrubby grasslands. Its diverse ecosystem is home to gopher tortoises, Florida black bears, bald eagles, bobcats, and other native wildlife. As a visitor, you can choose from three loop trails that range from 1 to 3.5 miles in length. The Yellow Trail is a moderate 1-mile hike perfect for families, while the 3.5-mile Orange Trail offers a more strenuous trek through wet prairies. Guided hikes are also available on Saturdays from November to April if you want to learn about the preserve’s ecology and history from a local expert. Don’t miss the chance for incredible birdwatching opportunities in Alva Scrub! Over 150 avian species can be spotted in the preserve throughout the year, including the endangered Florida scrub jay. Bring your binoculars and field guide to identify the many native and migratory birds that call this habitat home.

One of the best ways to experience the natural beauty of Lehigh Acres is to kayak or canoe down the Orange River. This spring-fed tributary flows through the eastern side of Lehigh Acres on its way to Estero Bay. Its shallow, slow-moving waters make it an ideal place for beginner paddlers to explore. You can launch your kayak or canoe from the public boat ramp at the Orange River Park off Gunnery Road. This 77-acre park also offers picnic shelters, playgrounds, and sports fields if you want to make a full day out of your visit. As you paddle downstream, you’ll drift past cypress swamps, marshes, and hardwood hammock forests. Keep your eyes peeled for turtles sunning themselves on logs and wading birds like egrets and herons fishing along the shoreline. If you’re lucky, you may even spot manatees or dolphins in the river’s lower brackish sections near the Gulf of Mexico! Most kayak trips take 2 to 4 hours depending on water levels and how far downstream you venture. Be sure to rent your bus with this in mind, and of course, pack sun protection, bug spray, and plenty of drinking water before you set out.

Stretch your legs on the Lehigh Legacy Trail, a nearly 9-mile paved path through the heart of Lehigh Acres. This rail-trail follows the route of an abandoned railroad corridor and provides an excellent opportunity to explore residential Lehigh Acres away from car traffic. The trail is very flat and accessible, making it a great place for a family bike ride. You can bring your own bikes or rent them from one of the many shops in Fort Myers and Cape Coral that offer delivery and pick-up service in Lehigh Acres. As you pedal along the Legacy Trail, you’ll bike past parks, golf courses, lakes, and historic buildings. Plenty of shade trees and benches line the path if you need a break. And if you work up an appetite, the trail runs right past plenty of convenience stores and restaurants where you can fuel up.

No visit to Lehigh Acres is complete without taking in America’s favorite pastime at a local baseball game. The area is home to both major league and minor league teams, so baseball fans have their pick of venues. For a fun family outing, head to the CenturyLink Sports Complex to cheer on the Minnesota Twins during their spring training season. This ballpark hosts about 15 home games in March, so you have plenty of chances to catch a pre-season matchup. Arrive early to watch players warm up and try to snag autographs before the first pitch. If you’re visiting between April and September, you can see the Fort Myers Mighty Mussels in action. This Class A minor league team plays over 60 home games each season at Hammond Stadium.
