Things to do in Independence, Missouri
Independence is a city in the United States that has been nicknamed "Little America" for its patriotic spirit.
It was founded with an idea of being a home where settlers would be free from religious persecution and could practice their religion without fear or interference, which makes it one of the most religiously diverse cities in Missouri.
The first house built by James Eads became Independence Hall, now known as Liberty Memorial Building on Truman Road. This building was declared to be a US National Historic Landmark in 1965 and houses many artifacts such as old maps, photographs and early records about the town's history up until 1916 when it finally became incorporated into Kansas City's municipal boundaries even though Independence still remains politically independent today with all property taxes going directly to Independence City Hall.
The first settlers in 1827 were Rev. David Rice Jones, a Welsh Congregationalist minister and his family, who traveled by wagon train from Illinois; the John Calvin Henderson family of Tennessee; and Hiram Williams of North Carolina. They settled on a bluff overlooking the Missouri River valley near present-day Wornall Road and Oak Street (now Truman Road). The town was originally named "Jonesborough" after the Reverend David Rice Jones' hometown in Tennessee but later changed to "Independence."
Williams donated land for what would become known as Liberty Square adjacent to Independence's courthouse where he also built homes that were rented out with proceeds benefiting churches, schools and charities during those years before Independence became an incorporated city.
